About 1stdibs, antique furniture and our top favorites

Ethnic Chic about 1stdibs antique furniture

It is highly likely you have already heard of 1stdibs, but for those who didn’t, this will be your new favorite treasure! For antique lovers, collectors and curators it is the best thing that happened (in online design world) the last years. This is not just an online shop, it’s a marketplace and online platform that connects the world’s best dealers, finest shops and most important galleries: just paradise ;)!

Love for 1stdibs

This online marketplace is certainly our favorite place for shopping exquisite and one-of-a-kind furniture,
at least if we have enough time, because special antique items from the other side of the world take some time to ship carefully. About the reliability you don’t have to worry, 1stdibs works with qualified dealers, risk-free transactions, insured shipping and has a strong policy (just like us ;)). Read more below about the story behind this successful company.

Michael Bruno and his love for Marché Aux Puces
When Michael Bruno, founder of 1stdibs, discovered the legendary Marché aux Puces in Paris, he saw this antique market as the-place-to-be for those who must have ‘first dibs’ on antique treasures. Bruno’s passion for antique furniture started here, at the marché he found the best galleries, collectors and dealers from around the world. But what if you’re not in Paris and you need that special item?

He couldn’t keep this discovery to himself and started in 2001 with a few, hand-picked dealers and created the website 1stdibs.com as a way for sharing his finds with the world. The company has grown quickly and is now definitly the most advanced online place to find the most sophisticated furniture and collectable items. It’s brilliant!

Our Favorite No.1 Item

Every now and then we are looking on their website, to find inspiration through the online magazine and blog or to find special items for our clients. Either way, it’s always fun and a little bit addictive ;). Last week we spotted the amazing Mid-Century Modern, orange sofas from the picture above. Love the come-back of the cloud-shaped, Serpentine sofas that go so well with Art Deco!

Our Favorite No.2 Creator

What we also love about 1stdibs, is their huge knowledge of important influences, time periods, designers, creators and so on. Take for example Jacques Adnet, he was a French art deco modernist designer, architect and interior designer. Also known for his furniture designs in leather, and dark wood. Discover his bookcase in the picture below, or check a wider range of his designs.

Favorite No. 3 Dealer
Another way to find your special item is searching for dealers. One of our favorite dealers is Maison Gerard, based in New York and founded in 1974. This dealer is specialised in fine French Art Deco furniture, lighting and objets d’art. What do you think of the beautiful Astres screen in the picture above? A design by Franck Chartrain.

Favorite No.4 Style
If you are looking for one certain style, 1stdibs is one of your best shots to find an item that fits within the style. Take for example this pair of chairs in one of our projects. We searched for faux-, bamboo-, chinoiserie- , iron- dining chairs and found these. Not exactly like this, we customised the color and re-upholstered the seat cushions, but the frame is original!
