When visiting the Biennale in Venice or antiques fairs as Tefaf or PAN Amsterdam, we often notice all the gorgeous gold coated ornaments and frames. Imagine the effort that is put into these art pieces: pure masterwork. Here’s what we know about gilding and what we think of gold gilded interior designs.
In short terms, gilding is the variety of decorative techniques for applying fine gold leaves to solid materials. We see gilding in a lot of furniture objects, architectural elements and frames, but there are many different ways. What about a gilded custom headboard? Table base? Lamps? Mirrors? Or even wallpapers?
One of our most amazing brands, De Gournay, recently launched a new gilding technique for silk wallpapers. Which was demonstrated during the Salon Residence and presented in our blue corridor design. Here’s the secret: first painting glue, afterwards they put a thin paper of gold or silver leaf and brush it off, et voila!
Gilding is a royalty thing and we all associate gilding with historical art pieces. Not surprising because it used to be exclusively for Kings and Queens. The elegant shine of historical art pieces is beautiful and restoration can be necessary, if so, go to Anouk Beerents in Amsterdam with your mirror..or shop a new one ;).
We love gilding in small details. Try doorhandles, boiserie or lamps. Watch the elegant shine when you put the lights on; pretty. The next lightings by Vaughan Designs are very classic and elegant, love this brand!
Who doesn’t like a little bit of gold in a room? Be it gilding or brass, we love it! This delicate and extravagance gilding technique will always be a special craftsmanship to us.
