Petrified Wood in hip interior

Petrified wood became a very ‘hip’ detail to our homes for the last few years. Ethnic Chic has been using this magnificent detail for a long time and we love to combine luxurious fabrics & burnished brass finishes with these amazing pieces of ‘art-by-nature’.

The story behind petrified wood

Do you have any idea what actually happened to this ancient wood? Till date it remains a mystery how exactly this ‘stoned wood’ became available on such a big scale in Arizona & Java.

The most plausible theory for this is a massive meteor impact many millions of years ago, which created a thick layer of dust, cutting the trees of from oxygen. In a painstakingly slow process the wood tissue was replaced by silicon rich water running through the wood, replacing the fibers and crystallising in the exact same structure becoming quartz.

Most of the petrified wood dates from 25.000.000 years ago but some ‘hidden forrest’ go back as much as a staggering 160.000.000 years!
