Anouska Hempel is one of our favourite interior designers because of her extraordinary, very stylish taste. From a career as Bond-girl into decorating the world’s best houses and hotels, Hempel’s life story is worth reading. Not forget to mention in 2002 she was in the top 100 interior designers and architects in the world according to the Architectural Digest.
Bond & Bardot-like
Growing up at a sheep ranch in New Zealand, Anouska Hempel was always busy rearrange things from a young age. If it wasn’t the way she liked it, she would start re-organising. After studying she moved to London, it was not surprising for a beautiful Bardot-like woman to be casted for several movies. Peaking at ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ (1969) as Bond girl!
“It was pretty silly, but good fun at the time,” she says of her acting career. “Being a rather second-rate actress, I finally thought, I’d rather be a designer. I knew I could make things look good.” Soon she was focussing on interior design.
Award Winning Hotels
Hempel’s work includes architecture, interior and furniture design, haute couture, fashion, garden and product design. Today she is not only interior architect but also hotelier and established three award winning boutique hotels: Blakes London, Blakes Amsterdam and The Hempel.
As you can see in the pictures, her taste is very extraordinary, elegant and sophisticated. In some ways it looks like Jacques Garcia’s style because of the heavy use of fabrics and the theatrical feel. Which is always nice to take inspiration from. For us Anouska Hempel is a great inspiration source to create a different look!
